Cottage Glen
To be built by Calistoga Affordable Housing, Cottage Glen will be a mixed-income community of 31 homes designed to provide much-needed housing for Calistoga families with a wide range of incomes. At least ten homes will be sold at prices affordable to middle-income families, with the balance to homebuyers with below-average incomes. Most buyers will participate in a mutual self-help program to help lower costs.
The new neighborhood will be located on a 5.9 acre site near the county fairgrounds in Calistoga. At the end of Redwood Avenue off Grant Street, the site is between Maggie Avenue and Michael Way, and has been designated as a prime in-fill opportunity in the city's General Plan since 2003.
Building homes on the site will substantially complete the neighborhood and will connect Redwood Avenue with Amber Way, which are both streets that were originally laid out to serve this parcel. Primary access to the site will be from Redwood Avenue.
The design of the site layout and the homes themselves is currently in process by Ross Chapin, an award-winning architect well known nationally for creating attractive "pocket neighborhoods." The homes will be modest in size (see "The Not So Big House Collection" by Sarah Susanka), similar to many of the older homes from the early 1900s in downtown Calistoga.
A primary aim of the development is to preserve and expand on the rural small town character of Calistoga that dates back to the days of Sam Brannan. The project will create a neighborhood of relatively small homes that respect the privacy of neighbors but provide community open space for social interaction.
